In a short period of time, Barcelona wonderkid Pau Cubarsi has enjoyed a meteoric rise to stardom. It was only a couple of months ago that the La Masia graduate made his debut and now he is a regular in Xavi’s team.

Cubarsi’s most recent appearance came in the form of his UEFA Champions League debut, in a must-win knockout game against Napoli. Despite the enormity of the occasion, the 17-year-old showed no nerves and turned in a Man of the Match display.

Given everything that has been going around, it is certainly a lot to take in for a young talent in the fledgling stages of his career.

“I’m taking it easy and being myself. The truth is that family and friends help me to stay grounded, they help me in this aspect,” said Cubarsi in an interview with Mundo Deportivo.

Having managed to keep Victor Osimhen quiet during the Napoli tie, Cubarsi will come face-to-face with one of the best in the world in Kylian Mbappe in less than a month.

Indeed, with Barcelona drawn against PSG in the Champions League quarterfinals, the teenager could face up against the likes of Mbappe, Randal Kolo Muani, and Goncalo Ramos.

“The truth is that now there are only top teams left. It will be a very difficult tie and we have to give 100 per cent,” he said about the quarterfinal tie.

“We have to go out with the same ambition as we did against Napoli. We’re going to fight with everything,” Cubarsi added.

Today was a special day for the youngster for he received his maiden call-up to the Spanish national team for their upcoming matches against Colombia and Brazil. Reacting to it, he said:

“I still haven’t assimilated it, they told me a little while ago. I still haven’t opened my mobile phone or anything, but surely all my friends and family will be very happy,” he remarked.

“And me too, very proud and very grateful to the confidence of the coach for calling us up.”

It has been an eventful few weeks for Cubarsi and he awaits yet another stern test later this weekend when Barcelona face Atletico Madrid, where he will come up against Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann.
