After a brilliant breakthrough at Barcelona, Pau Cubarsi is all set to kickstart his international career this week.
Along with Lamine Yamal, Cubarsi is one of two Barcelona teenagers who will represent Spain in the upcoming friendlies.
Cubarsi, in particular, will be in focus as he is poised to break the record of Sergio Ramos to become the youngest defender to represent Spain.
Talking about the milestone, Cubarsi said, “It would be a dream come true. If I can achieve this number and surpass Sergio Ramos, who was my role model, I will be very happy.”
The young defender went on to reveal how he got to know about his call-up to the Spanish national team.
“We finished training and it was the day of the Champions League draw. We were in the dressing room, and the physical trainer said to me: Congratulations!
I was a little shocked because I didn’t know the list had been released, and then when I confirmed the news everyone started congratulating me. I’m very happy,” he said in a carpool discussion with Yamal.
Yamal, for his part, had something of an advice for his Barcelona teammate. “Have fun, debuting at 16 or 17 is not something you experience every day, you will do very well,” he said.
The explosive winger hailed Cubarsi for his ability to read the game, adding, “Today I bring with me Pau Cubarsi, one of the three best defenders at getting the ball out.”
Cubarsi, meanwhile, said he would like to offer composure and stability in the Spanish backline.
“I want to provide calm in the match, pass the ball over, and provide personality, and of course without comparing myself to anyone,” he said.
“I don’t know how to put myself in another player’s place. I want to be myself and I don’t want to compare myself to anyone.”
Finally, Cubarsi was asked about his defensive role models. The youngster had earlier mentioned Ramos, but he also added Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol to the list.
“Gerard Pique, and Puyol because of his personality,” he concluded.
