Baseball Legend Willie Mays Dead - San Francisco Giants Player & Hall of Famer Dies at Age 93

Baseball legend Willie Mays has sadly passed away.

On Tuesday (June 18), the San Francisco Giants announced that Willie, nicknamed the “Say Hey Kid,” died earlier that day at the age of 93.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that San Francisco Giants Legend and Hall of Famer Willie Mays passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93,” the Giants tweeted.

Keep reading to find out more…Willie played as a center fielder in the MLB for 22 seasons starting in 1951 before retiring in 1973. He was a two-time league MVP, a 24-time All Star, and is considered one of the greatest players in baseball history.

He was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979.

In 2015, then-President Barack Obama honored Willie with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

“His quiet example while excelling on one of America’s biggest stages helped carry forward the banner of civil rights,” Obama said at the time. “It’s because of giants like Willie that someone like me could even think about running for president.”

The MVP award for the best player of the World Series was named after Willie in 2017.
