The Federal Government’s Technical Subcommittee on Dam Evaluation has assured the public that the Gubi Dam in Bauchi State is in satisfactory condition, following an inspection on Wednesday.

The subcommittee, led by the Director of Dams and Reservoir Operations at the Ministry of Water Resources, Aliyu Ibrahim, conducted the assessment as part of a nationwide evaluation of dams.

Speaking to journalists after the inspection, Ibrahim said that the reason for the evaluation of the dams across the country follows the collapse of a structure in the Alau dam in Borno State.

He said, “Federal Government saw the need for us to go round to establish the conditions of our dams going forward to avert the reoccurrence of similar situations in the country.”

Aliyu, who noted that the Gubi dam appears to be in good condition by physical examination, believed that “the dam is good. All the necessary features required in a dam are okay. You can look at the structure that breaks the waves from affecting the stability of any bank is intact.

“And even the dam stream is okay. So I think in physical examination we can deduce the healthy status of this dam to say is very good.”

However, he added that the committee would not comment on the internal condition of the dam until further assessments are complete.

“After the assessment of the dams across the country, there will be recommendations to the Federal Government on the remedy to put in place, as actions will be taken where necessary,” he said.

Some parts of Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital, suffered a heavy blow by water following the collapse of the Alau dam.
