Matt Potter is now the full-time sporting director for Bay FC, the club announced on Wednesday. The announcement removes an interim tag from his role and updates his job description.

Potter was hired in December of 2023 as the Bay FC’s technical director and was then named head of football and interim sporting director in June, when Lucy Rushton — the team’s first general manager — resigned.

“We are excited to officially name Matt Potter our sporting director,” Bay FC co-chair Alan Waxman said in a statement. “He deeply understands the women’s game and what it takes to build a winning franchise, playing a key role in making our inaugural season a success.”

Bay FC made the NWSL playoffs as an expansion team in 2024 thanks to a surge in form at the back end of the season. The team’s roster makeover was led by the arrival of 2019 World Cup winner and United States international centerback Abby Dahlkemper.

“2024 was an incredible year and I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue building on the foundation we established in our first season,” Potter said in a statement. “The club, staff, and fan base that supports Bay FC are all one of a kind, and what makes it a privilege to wear our badge.”

Potter was previously the head coach of the Kansas City Current, leading the team to an NWSL Championship appearance in 2022 (where the team lost to the Portland Thorns) before being fired abruptly at the start of the 2023 season.

Prior to that, Potter served as a scout for the United States women’s national team and head coach of the U.S.’ U-23 team.

Potter’s official designation as the highest-ranking member of Bay FC’s technical staff leaves four NWSL teams in need of filling that role: Angel City FC, North Carolina Courage, Portland Thorns FC, and Racing Louisville FC.
