The rise of Marc Casado has diffused the worry around Barcelona’s defensive midfield position. Needless to say, it is a massive testament to the youngster’s quality given how it was seen as a crisis just a few months ago.

Casado and Marc Bernal provide Barcelona with serious depth in the department and a new signing is no longer seen as a necessity.

Yet, the Catalans are keeping their options open and Joshua Kimmich is said to be one of their targets especially given his relationship with Hansi Flick.

“We have already said publicly that we want to start negotiations with Joshua Kimmich as soon as possible for a contract extension.”

“I would like him to remain one of the pillars of the team,” he added, as relayed by SPORT.

While Bayern Munich are indeed keen on tying the player down to the club, the situation is not as clear from Kimmich’s end as he is not as certain about the renewal.

The player felt undervalued by the club last year and the manner in which his situation was handled did not go down well with him.

Another hurdle in his contract renewal is the monetary aspect where the two parties continue to differ. Kimmich is said to be unwilling to lower his contract demands while Bayern Munich are leaving no stone unturned to lower their wage bill.

It is, thus, uncertain if an agreement can be reached and there is a real chance the midfielder could look for a new club next summer. Given that he will be a free agent, Barcelona will be alert.
