Jamal Musiala is one of Bayern Munich’s most important and special players who will be a part of the squad that faces FC Barcelona this Wednesday on the third matchday of the Champions League.
The 21-year-old German international attacking midfielder has been out injured for a while now and has been kept wrapped in cotton wool for days so that he can be ready to face the Blaugrana.
However, heading into Wednesday’s clash, there had been talk of his likely absence against Barça. But that has changed as he is travelling to Catalonia with the Bavarian giants.
Bayern Munich director, Christoph Freund, however, was cryptic about Musiala’s fitness levels and the minutes he might play tomorrow.
“Jamal is flying with us, we’ll see how long he lasts,” Freund enigmatically noted (h/t Mundo Deportivo).
On Monday, Musiala already trained with the group, although questions remain about his physical condition heading into Montjuic.
Freund’s comments only served to fuel this uncertainty, with reports suggesting that manager Vincent Kompany is only likely to make a call on Musiala’s involvement on the day of the match.
“It’s very important that he’s there, although the coach will decide if his condition is sufficient for 90 minutes,” Freund added.
Due to hip discomfort, Musiala did not play against either Eintracht Frankfurt or VfB Stuttgart, but the importance of the Barcelona match makes his availability crucial.
With three goals and three assists in 565 minutes spread across eight official matches so far this season, the young German is a reference point for Bayern due to his vision, instincts and dribbling ability.
Meanwhile, Aleksandar Pavlovic, suffering from a collarbone fracture, 24-year-old center-back Josip Stanisic, with a knee ligament injury, Sacha Boey, with a meniscus injury, and Hiroki Ito with a metatarsal fracture, are all out of action.
