Bayern Munich are increasingly likely to sack Thomas Tuchel this summer with Xabi Alonso emerging as a target.

Tuchel has endured a difficult season at Bayern with the club already eliminated from the DFB Pokal, lagging behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and faltering in the Champions League.

Bayern are currently five points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the league following a crushing 3-0 defeat to Alonso's side at the weekend.

As a result, the German giants are looking at options to replace Tuchel this summer following their 1-0 defeat to Lazio in the first leg of the last-16 tie on Wednesday.

However, the axing could come sooner if they drop out of Europe and fall further behind in the German title race.

Should Bayern fail to progress, it means that the club could end the season without a trophy, meaning that Tuchel's campaign would be deemed a failure by the club's high standards.

Leverkusen's success has put Alonso on the radar of some of Europe's top clubs, most notably Liverpool who are looking for a successor for Jurgen Klopp.

Alonso is the preferred candidate at Bayern having played for the club between 2014 and 2017.

Should they decide to part ways with Tuchel, Bayern will be determined to snap up Alonso before Liverpool, meaning that the former Spain midfielder could have his pick of two of Europe's biggest clubs.
