Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund says discussions are in place to extend Jamal Musiala’s contract in order for the forward to ‘help shape an era’ at the club.

Musiala, 21, is widely regarded as one of the finest young players in European football after winning four Bundesliga titles at the Allianz Arena since his breakthrough in 2020.

The Germany international has twice been named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season and finished as the joint-top goalscorer at Euro 2024 along with Cody Gakpo, Harry Kane, Georges Mikautadze and Dani Olmo.

Musiala’s current contract with Bayern runs through to 2026 and teams from around Europe have been keeping close tabs on the situation, with the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain all linked.

Manchester United have also been credited with a strong interest and Musiala fuelled these rumours as he revealed that Joshua Zirkzee had been trying to lure him to Old Trafford over the summer.

‘You always joke around with friends and dream of playing together in a team one day,’ Musiala told German publication Welt am Sonntag.

‘The jokes go both ways. I also told Josh that he should come back to Bayern. But you shouldn’t take that too seriously.’

However, Bayern are relaxed about the situation and negotiations have been in place for some time with a view to securing the youngster on a bumper new deal.

‘There are always talks. We want to extend his contract,’ Bayern chief Freund said.

‘We want Jamal to stay with us long-term and help shape an era.

‘Hopefully the talks will have a positive end! But there’s no time pressure.’

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany, meanwhile, is ‘delighted’ to have Musiala at his disposal and backed the attacker to become one of the greatest players on the planet at a press conference this morning.

‘Jamal should just carry on in the same way and not change anything. We’re delighted to have him,’ the Belgian told reporters ahead of Bayern’s trip to Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga.

‘He can become one of the three or four best players in the world.’
