Bayern Munich: radiant at the start of the season, Leroy Sané sank again…

Four years since Leroy Sané has now been a Bayern Munich player, and four years since the German started his seasons in the right direction only to end them in reverse. After a thunderous start to the season, where he was decisive on 14 occasions, all in 11 Bundesliga matches (8 goals and 6 assists), the former Manchester City player fell back into his worries. Voted best player for Bayern Munich in September, Sané would now be eligible for the trophy for the worst Bavarian player of the year 2024.

A big gap on which it is difficult to put into words, but which clearly illustrates the player’s inconsistency since his arrival at the club three and a half years ago. To his credit, injuries have inexorably cut him off in recent seasons, in this case his cruciate ligament rupture suffered in 2020, possibly one of the causes of this repetitive shortness of breath over an entire season. His statistical record for 2024 (0 goals), combined with his very significant impact in Bayern’s game, also clearly reflects this troubling irregularity.

His place at the Euro is not assured

Still a starter in his club despite a clear drop in performance (Coman’s injury redistributed the cards), Sané will not be able to say the same this month with the Mannschaft. For this last gathering before a Euro at home this summer (June 14 to July 14, 2024), Julian Nagelsmann had to do without his services, he who had made him one of his starters in November. The reason ? His suspension inflicted by the German federation, and following his blood attack when he hit Phillipp Mwene during Germany’s defeat against Austria in a friendly (2-0). After a first period during which he displayed his qualities in disorder, the 26-year-old left his team at 10 in the 49th minute of play.

Invited to speak about the state of form of his player this week at a press conference, Thomas Tuchel did not want to overwhelm him, but wanted to encourage him: “He must perform well tomorrow, (facing Darmstadt), and he will have to train well. I would prefer it to be called with the selection. To compensate, he will be here to train and treat his aches. He’s going to have to live up to it, that’s where all the attention is focused.”, confided the former PSG coach. A wish which ultimately did not find an echo. Active but not very productive, the German was replaced shortly after the hour mark by Mathys Tel, scorer. Serge Gnabry, replacing at kick-off, also scored four minutes after coming on. Which should not strengthen the status of Leroy Sané either…
