Bayern Munich’s new board member Max Eberl is adamant that the club want to keep Mathys Tel following a reported approach from Manchester United.

Tel has shown flashes of talent since his €28.5 million (£24.4m) move from Rennes in July 2022 but has started just one Bundesliga match in nearly two seasons at Bayern.

Reports in Germany have claimed that Manchester United have been monitoring Tel’s situation at Bayern and initial contact has been made over a potential deal for the 18-year-old.

Tel’s advisor has also refused to rule out the possibility of a transfer this summer, suggesting that the forward has been frustrated with his lack of opportunities under Thomas Tuchel this season.

However, Eberl has made it clear that Bayern want Tel to remain at the club.

‘We want to bring the best possible players to Bayern who want the greatest possible success, that is, a title,’ Eberl said at a press conference on Tuesday.

‘Bayern has always done this with great foresight and an eye. That’s why the club is so special, it has grown solidly over decades. We will also find ways to find good players.

‘Also players like Mathys Tel. It must be possible to successfully lead Bayern to titles and still develop. We want to promote the development of players like Tel.’

According to Bild, Tel’s advisor, Gadiri Camara, and Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, held a ‘positive’ meeting on Monday about the player’s future with the German club.

It’s understood that Tel would have contemplated leaving Bayern had Tuchel remained in charge for another season.

Speaking last week, Lothar Matthaus criticised Tuchel for his handling of Tel at Bayern.

‘Tel has received a lot of praise from Tuchel, but praise alone is not what the player wants, he wants playing time,’ Matthaus said in an interview with Abendzeitung Munich.

‘When I saw the line-up in Bochum, I was amazed. Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman are injured, Leroy Sane is injured, I need speed on the wing and suddenly Jamal Musiala and Thomas Muller are playing on the wing – but that would have been a game for Tel.

‘If three players are out, it’s a slap in the face for a young player when the second centre-forward [Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting] is preferred and Musiala and Muller play in positions that they might not necessarily be in want to play.

‘That’s nothing against Thomas Tuchel, he sometimes just has a different attitude to players and positions than I do, but according to my football mind, Tel shouldn’t have played until the last quarter of an hour.

‘For me, Tel is someone who has the Bayern Munich DNA.

‘He didn’t get enough playing time – not just in Bochum, but also at the beginning of the season when he scored a lot of goals when he came on. He doesn’t always want to just be a joker.’
