In one year, the situation of Mathys Tel has changed a lot. While he started the 2023/2024 season on a high with 6 goals in 10 matches in the colors of Rekormeister, which allowed him to discover the French U21 team, the French striker is today in a more complicated situation. Already last season, his successful start to the season had been accompanied by a long drought since he had played 20 matches in a row with the Rekordmeister without finding the net while seeing his playing time drastically reduced.
In disagreement with Thomas Tuchel, Mathys Tel thought that the arrival this summer of Vincent Kompany would change his situation. However, it is quite the opposite that is happening to the native of Sarcelles. Starting twice this season for 6 appearances in total and only 179 minutes of play, Mathys Tel stayed longer off the field than on it. He had 6 matches where he spent 90 minutes on the sidelines without coming on. A situation that is difficult to sustain over time for him who needs to continue to progress.
Towards a loan in January?
Vincent Kompany, however, was keen to support him in the run-up to the clash against Bayer Leverkusen a month ago: “I want to say that we really believe in Mathys Tel. Mathys has great talent. It will be available tomorrow. We have a team with a lot of competition. That’s good, but we see a big future for him.» Since then, the French striker has not seen his situation improve and he is still running behind his first goal of the season. The one who extended his contract last March until June 2029 knows that the Recorder believes in him but in the short term it seems complicated.
While the starting striker position is clogged with Harry Kane who is piling up the goals and already has 15 goals and 6 goals in 12 games, Matyhs Tel doesn’t have a chance in other positions. Indeed, Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané have the advantage over him to occupy the three positions behind the striker. According to Sky Sports GermanyBayern Munich could therefore be tempted to loan him this winter even if the main interested party mainly wants to establish himself within the Bavarian club. In the past, Werder Bremen and Borussia Mönchengladbach had made inquiries.
