Ronald Araujo is one of the few Barcelona stars facing an uncertain summer ahead. The defender has been subjected to a move to Bayern Munich, who are ready to offer a fortune for his services.

Barcelona, for their part, could find the offers tempting, knowing that Araujo’s big-money sale could put an end to the club’s economic woes.

Barcelona rejected Araujo approach in January

A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has offered more details on Araujo’s transfer saga, revealing that Bayern Munich had made a lucrative offer in January.

The Bavarians were willing to offer Araujo a salary of €12 million, along with a bid of €80 million.

Barça did not consider the offer because selling the player without being on the 1:1 rule meant the Catalans would have the allowance to strengthen the squad.

Moreover, the club did not want to offload one of its best defenders during the January transfer market. As a result, they did not even want to negotiate with Bayern.

Barça keen on extending contract

Instead of contemplating a potential sale in the summer, MD suggests that Barcelona have taken a firm stance on the Araujo front.

It appears the club are determined to keep hold of Araujo for the long term, as they consider the Uruguayan international as the best defender in the team and the backbone of the team’s defensive line.

Therefore, despite the economic constraints, Barça are focused on retaining the services of Araujo beyond the coming summer.

The Catalans, in fact, have deployed its officials to try and expand the relationship with Araujo’s agents, which can be viewed as a prelude to a potential renewal offer.

Araujo’s current deal at Barcelona expires in 2026.
