Joshua Kimmich has been on the radars of FC Barcelona for a long time now. The 28-year-old German international was one of the club’s main targets last summer to replace Sergio Busquets.
However, the Blaugrana’s financial situation meant that there was no room to make a move for the Bayern Munich midfield mainstay.
But it did not mean that Barcelona’s interest in Kimmich ended as the Catalans have continued to monitor him in Germany and retain him on their transfer wishlist heading into the summer of 2024.
Bayern could be open to Kimmich sole
What works in Barça’s favour this time out is that Kimmich’s contract with Bayern Munich expires in 2025, meaning he will enter the final year of his deal this summer.
As such, Christian Falk of BILD is reporting that the Bavarian giants are willing to discuss his sale this summer in order to avoid losing him for free in 2025 when his contract runs down.
Concrete contract talks between Kimmich and Bayern Munich are yet to take place, although the midfielder hinted that he would be willing to sit down and negotiate.
“At some point, the club will approach me, and we’ll discuss it between us and not with the media,” he had said earlier this month.
However, Bayern Munich are afraid that Barcelona might not snap him up for free in 2025 and as such are opening the doors to negotiate his exit in the summer window of this year itself.
Xavi trying to convince Kimmich
The report further states that Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has been speaking to Kimmich to try and convince him to make the switch from Bavaria to Catalonia, following in the footsteps of former teammate Robert Lewandowski.
It is no secret that Xavi admires Kimmich a lot and the midfielder himself has hailed the current Barça manager as one of his idols in the past.
Whether that mutual admiration and respect leads to Xavi convincing Kimmich to hold off on renewing his contract at Bayern and push for a move to Barcelona will be interesting to see.
