Interesting to read from this BBC Sport pundit.

Michael Brown talking about Newcastle United.

The former Manchester City and Tottenham midfielder getting it exactly right.

Michael Brown talking to BBC Sport about Newcastle United – 5 April 2024:

“The amount of players Newcastle have lost would cripple any squad.

“I was just looking at their injury list and it is madness. No manager can handle that.

“Certain things can happen in a season and they were dealt a really tough hand in the Champions League, but if they can finish in the top six then it will still be a really good season for them.

“They will probably have wanted more but I think we expect too much of this team.

“Newcastle were looking to recruit this summer and strengthen their squad anyway, but now they will have to do so.

“But they have financial restraints and there is lots of talk about players leaving for that to happen.”

As I indicated above, this BBC Sport pundit a refreshing change from the nonsense you get from so much of the media.

Claims that the number of Newcastle United players regularly missing is supposedly no different to the case at most Premier League clubs. It is funny how when journalists and pundits come out with this rubbish, they are a little light on the detail…

On Tuesday night for the Everton match, Eddie Howe was missing Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali due to suspensions / bans, plus due to injuries and/or ongoing recoveries, also Nick Pope, Callum Wilson, Joelinton, Kieran Trippier, Tino Livramento, Lewis Miley, Miguel Almiron, Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman and Matt Targett.

These past six months, having nine or ten players, or more, unavailable has become the norm for Eddie Howe.

Basically a full team of players missing on a regular basis and many of them so key to Howe’s first eleven.

Plus of course the fact is that during matches, so few viable options to bring on from the bench.

Eddie Howe also knowing that for the likes of Botman and Lascelles, their recoveries will extend into next season, a case of just how much of next season they will miss?
