The BBC has taken the rare step of issuing a statement on an ongoing misconduct probe pertaining to one of its shows, Strictly Come Dancing and the Giovanni Pernice fallout.

The BBC has been gathering evidence in recent weeks as it examines serious complaints against a dancer widely understood to be Pernice from multiple claimants including, reportedly, Sherlock actor Amanda Abbington, who was partnered with Pernice last year but left the show after a few weeks citing medical reasons.

British legal firm Carter Ruck is understood to be representing Abbington and others.

Issuing a rare statement yesterday, the BBC “urged people not to indulge in speculation,” adding: “Whilst we know our shows have been positive experiences for many of those who have taken part, we will always look at any issues raised with care, fairness and sensitivity to everyone concerned.”

The statement added: “It is a longstanding position that the BBC does not comment on specific matters related to individuals. Nor ordinarily, would we comment on whether we are reviewing any individual complaints.

“Recently, we have seen a number of media reports about a high profile show. Anyone involved in a complaint has a right to confidentiality and fair process. If a complaint is made to the BBC, we assess and take any necessary steps to establish the facts, whether there is a case to answer, and, if appropriate, what action should be taken. This is all within the context of the BBC having duties of care to everyone linked to a complaint – that applies to those that have raised the complaint and to those that have been complained about.”

Pernice, who has now quit Strictly, has previously said he is “surprised” by the media reports and rejects “any suggestion of abusive or threatening behaviour.”

Taking time to break silence on an ongoing legal matter is an unusual move from the BBC and is reflective of the gravity of media attention that the story has so far attracted, which ironically remains undimmed by the statement.

Strictly, which is produced by BBC Studios, won a BAFTA this month for Best Entertainment and recently turned 20. It is frequently the BBC’s most-watched show of the year.
