Beaten by Lazio, Bayern dives

In great difficulty for several weeks, Bayern Munich poorly negotiated their first round against Lazio Rome (0-1).

Relegated to second place in a Bundesliga that it is preparing to abandon for the first time in more than a decade, Bayern Munich had an answer to give, this Tuesday evening, for its first round against Lazio Rome in round of 16 of the Champions League.

The Bavarian club approached this match in a deleterious atmosphere. Five days after the slap received on the pitch at Bayer Leverkusen (0-3), Thomas Tuchel is increasingly weakened, while his executives are torn apart in the locker room.

Bayern no longer responds

It is in this context that Bayern had to try to uphold their standing against an unapologetic Lazio team. Led by the experienced Immobile on the attacking front and the former Marseillais Guendouzi in his midfield, Maurizio Sarri’s team had assets to put forward to set a trap for the German champion. And Bayern fell into it. Without ideas and lacking realism, the German club negotiated its first round badly by conceding a compromising setback.

Immobile allowed the locals to break the deadlock by converting a penalty twenty minutes from the end (1-0, 69th). A turning point, clearly, since Dayot Upamecano left his teammates with ten on the same action. Bayern tried to revolt, but it was too late. Overall dominant before the break, the German club was unable to capitalize on its highlights, like Sané and Musiala, not successful in the finish. Bayern are now up against the wall. This is a very significant setback in these times. The week is likely to be lively on the other side of the Rhine…
