Becky Lynch is renowned for her outspoken demeanor and unwavering beliefs. She advocates for equality and progress within the industry. Lynch recently expressed her support for the concept of a women’s match at WrestleMania without titles, viewing it as a significant step forward for women’s wrestling. This stance reflects her commitment to advancing opportunities and representation for female athletes in WWE.
As of now, there are three women’s matches confirmed for WrestleMania 40. Becky Lynch is set to take on Rhea Ripley for the WWE Women’s World Title, while Bayley will challenge IYO SKY for the WWE Women’s Title. Additionally, a six-woman tag team match is scheduled, featuring Bianca Belair, Naomi, and Jade Cargill against Damage CTRL, consisting of Asuka, Kairi Sane, and Dakota Kai.
In an interview with Steve Fall of WrestlingNewsCo, Becky Lynch was asked about the significance of being in a title match at WrestleMania. Lynch expressed that it doesn’t necessarily matter to her to be in a title match at WrestleMania. She emphasized the importance of being featured in a highlighted match, regardless of whether it involves a championship.
Lynch cited examples of male superstars like Seth Rollins or Randy Orton, who may or may not always compete in title matches but are consistently strong features on the card. She highlighted the importance of representation and being seen as stars in their own right, beyond just championship matches.
“No, no, not at this. The thing is, is that it’s that point where you become a star in your own right. That you don’t necessarily have to be in a title match for it to matter. You’re in a highlighted match, whatever that is. So, you know, you look at the likes of Seth Rollins or Randy Orton you know, sometimes they’ll have a title match. Sometimes they won’t have a title match, but they’re always strong features and that’s as important sometimes as a title match, especially when you’re talking about women and representation and being seen as stars in our own right. I think often, far too often, it’s just relegated to, well, what are the women’s title matches and there’s no storyline-driven matches, which is the exception.”
Lynch noted that while women’s wrestling has made progress, there is still a tendency to focus primarily on title matches rather than on personal storylines and character development. Therefore, being involved in a match that is not centered around a title signifies progress and a positive step forward for women’s wrestling.
”When we think of how much we’ve moved forward, oftentimes, we don’t rely on our female stars as much as we would in terms of our male stars. when it comes to just storylines. It’s the title matches, but not necessarily just the personal things and the personal gripes. So being able to be in a match that’s not a title match, I find that to be progress. I think that’s a good thing.”
Becky Lynch also believes that storytelling in wrestling greater significance than the matches themselves. Nevertheless, we’ll have to see
