Former Benin Republic star Razak Omotoyossi says the Cheetahs have the opportunity to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Benin are currently in third place on seven points after four games in Group C.

The Gernot Rohr-led side came from a goal down to beat Nigeria’s Super Eagles 2-1 on matchday four in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

It was their second win in the group after they edged Rwanda 1-0 also in Abidjan.

Omotoyossi, who played for Benin Republic from 2004 to 2016, scoring 21 goals in 55 appearances, cited Togo’s 2006 World Cup qualification as a good example which the Cheetahs can emulate.

“Well, let me say history can happen sometimes. When Togo went to the World Cup nobody believed. So Benin has the chance now, they just have to use it now,” the 38-year-old was quoted on brila.net. So, the game remains up to them.”

Omotoyossi also explained what the Super Eagles must do to get back to being the best.

“Nigeria has to work hard if they want to become African giants that they are.”

The qualifiers will resume in March 2025 with Benin Republic taking on Zimbabwe away on matchday five.
