The Benue State Government is set to establish grain hubs to streamline the sale of agricultural products, enabling off-takers to buy directly from centralised points rather than from individual farmers.
The Managing Director of the Benue Investment and Property Company, Dr Raymond Asemakaha, disclosed this on Tuesday during a meeting with stakeholders in the agricultural sector, including the Benue Traders Association and the Benue Farmers and Traders Protection and Development Association.
Asemakaha explained that the initiative aims to ensure farmers receive fair value for their produce.
He added that the hubs will address the issue of external buyers depleting local agro-commodities, which has led to reduced earnings for farmers and higher food prices in Benue State.
“With the support of local traders, BIPC aims to position Benue as a grain hub where we can aggregate and sell produce directly to external buyers.
“This will allow us to collect produce and sell it at fair value, ensuring farmers benefit from standardised measurements and prompt payments upon delivery,” he said.
The Managing Director further explained that the introduction of a Warehouse Receipt System will ensure these services reach farmers across the state, providing them with fair compensation.
In addition to these hubs, BIPC plans to introduce the use of “Benue Sacs” for agro-commodities, allowing for easier tracking and management of farm produce.
The President of the Benue Traders Association, Iormua Michael, commended Asemakaha’s initiative and pledged support to help BIPC achieve its objectives.
Speaking at the meeting, Manasseh Torsue, President of the Benue Farmers and Traders Protection and Development Association, highlighted challenges that have hindered efficient market operations in Benue.
He cited issues such as lack of government involvement, inadequate market regulation, absence of standard measurement scales, and high levies from unofficial sources, alongside police checkpoints disrupting trade.
