While he missed the resumption with Al-Ittihad, which reignited rumors of departure, Karim Benzema would be stranded in Mauritius by a cyclone.
There is indeed a storm warning, literally, around Karim Benzema. While the Frenchman finished the first part of the season on a bad note, his absence from the restart at Al-Ittihad caused a lot of ink to flow. His trainer, Marcelo Gallardo, even decided to remove him from the group.
But according to Marca, Benzema would have justified his absence by… cyclone Béral. The Madrid daily explains that the 2022 Ballon d’Or would be stuck in Mauritius, where he had taken a few days of vacation. Storm Béral is currently sweeping across the Indian Ocean, and should soon reach Reunion Island.
An excuse to ease tensions?
This setback could justify Benzema’s absence, and somewhat ease tensions around his case at Al-Ittihad. But there is still work to be done, because the former Real Madrid striker was taken aback by some supporters of the Jeddah club, which suggested an early end to the adventure for the “Nueve” in Saudi Arabia.
If Benzema had really “dried up” the recovery, it would be the illustration of a deep and perhaps definitive fracture. There, this cyclone story changes the situation a little, and suggests the possibility of reconciliation.
In recent hours, transfer specialist Nicolo Schira, however, revealed that Benzema wanted to leave Al-Ittihad to return to play in Europe. His name has been circulating around Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, two clubs used to being at the center of rumors. However, no concrete avenues have been put forward.
