The hypothesis of seeing the 2022 Ballon d'Or don the blue jersey has gained weight.

He ended his tormented history with the France team in December 2022, in a brutal and sudden manner. After a physical problem which forced him to give up the World Cup in Qatar, Karim Benzema announced his international retirement.

Water has flowed under the bridges since then, and a year and a half later, the possibility of seeing the former Lyonnais don a blue jersey to represent his country can no longer be ruled out.

“Why not, it could be great”

While he had a rather mixed experience in the Al-Ittihad Club in Saudi Arabia, Benzema, eligible for a call-up for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, agreed to take up the challenge. Questioned as part of the show L’Équipe du Soir on La Chaîne L’Équipe, “KB9” was blunt: “The Olympics? Why not, of course, it could be great!“.

Benzema would thus find Thierry Henry to become the head of the Blues at the Olympics. An event which opens the door to other former legends of the selection like Hugo Lloris or Raphaël Varane. “If they want to and Thierry Henry needs them, that’s perfect. The goal is to have the best team. It’s Thierry who chooses, they can be candidates like many others”, recalled Didier Deschamps. Here is one less point on which the coach and his former attacker will agree.
