'Beyond' Lyrics: 'Moana 2' Songwriters Explain Meaning & Why It's Not a Traditional 'I Want' Song

“Beyond” is Moana’s big song in the new Disney animated film Moana 2 and the songwriters are explaining the meaning behind it.

Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the music for the first movie, but Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow took over for the sequel.

“What lies beyond? / Under skies I’ve never seen / Will I lose myself between / My home and what’s unknown?” Moana sings on the new track.

Barlow told the Los Angeles Times that Moana is facing “a call straight from her ancestors looking toward the future instead of trying to discover the past. It’s more of a question song than an ‘I want’ song.”

Bear added, “But then it turns into a statement at the end. She is like, ‘I will go beyond,’ and that is the answer to ‘How Far I’ll Go.’”
