A year ago, Nicole Kidman revealed that the team behind Big Little Lies were working on a third season.
Development has stalled somewhat, despite Kidman and other cast members, including Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern and Zoe Kravitz talking up the chances of a return, at least five years after the second season aired on HBO.
Now, we know why. HBO chief Casey Bloys said that he was waiting for Liane Moriarty’s sequel book before moving forward.
“[Nicole’s] very excited. They’re all excited. We’re excited. We’re all waiting for the book, which I believe is coming soon, but I do not have a copy in my hands,” he said.
Moriarty revealed earlier this fall that she was writing a sequel to her original Big Little Lies book. The book will feature a timejump as well as new characters. “I’m writing a sequel with all the children as teenagers so now the women are the parents of teens,” she told Radio Times.
Big Little Lies was written and executive produced David E. Kelley. It starred Witherspoon, Kidman, Kravitz and Dern alongside Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgard, Adam Scott, James Tupper and Jeffrey Nordling as well as Meryl Streep in season two.
