Honor to the reigning champion who opened the Bundesliga season on the lawn of Borussia Mönchengladbach. It seems that the summer has not changed anything for this team that was unbeatable last season. Its squad has hardly changed, and like in the spring, Bayer Leverkusen snatched victory from Gladbach 3-2 in the very long last minutes. The penalty scored in two stages by Wirtz at 90th+11 made the difference.

It was a close call, even though everything had started well. Xhaka (12th) and Wirtz (38th) had launched theirs perfectly at the end of a first half that was almost one-way traffic, even if the Poulains had reduced the gap for a while through Kleindienst (42nd), a goal that was ultimately disallowed. The striker finally snatched, for a time, the equalizer at the end of the match (86th). In the meantime, Elvedi had already relaunched his team (58th) but it was ultimately to no avail.
