Bolton vs Cheltenham abandoned due to medical emergency

Bolton have had their League One game against Cheltenham on Saturday abandoned and postponed after a medical emergency in the crowd.

Medics rushed over to the fan in the stands with a defibrillator as stewards ushered nearby supporters away.

Fans moved out of the way to allow medical personnel to carry out CPR.

After nearly 20 minutes of treatment on the stairs, the stricken fan was taken down to the pitch where they were carried out on a stretcher.

A waiting ambulance around the corner then took them to the nearest hospital.

The referee halted play after 29 minutes at 0-0 with both sets of players returning to their dressing rooms.

The decision was made about 15 minutes later to abandon the match at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Discussions were held with the two managers, clubs and match officials before a decision was made.

Both sets of fans applauded when the announcement was made in the ground.

Bolton provided an update on social media site X, writing: "Due to a medical emergency in the crowd, today’s game has been postponed.

Cheltenham also posted to social media, saying: "Today’s fixture against Bolton Wanderers has been abandoned due to a medical emergency in the crowd.

"The thoughts of everyone at Cheltenham Town Football Club are with the individual involved and their loved ones at this time."

It is the second time this season that a match in League One has been abandoned due to an emergency in the stands.

Leyton Orient vs Lincoln was called off after 82 minutes when a supporter needed CPR in the stands.
