Bayer Leverkusen and Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has reacted to his exclusion from the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award nomination.
On Thursday. CAF announced the 10 nominees for this year’s award which will hold in Morocco with Boniface overlooked for selection.
However, his Nigerian teammates Ademola Lookman and William Troost-Ekong made the cut.
Commenting on the snub, Boniface responded to a post by Leagues Reporter, an X handle who listed the striker’s achievements in the 2023/24 season.
“Won the Bundesliga, won DFB-Pokal, Europa silver medalist, scored 21 goals, assisted 10 goals, played 34 matches. Boniface Victor didn’t make it to the list of nominated players for CAF Player of the Year. This is a big surprise.”
Boniface then added his other achievements and attributed his exclusion due to his absence at the 2023 AFCON.
“Rookie of the season (Bundesliga)
Team of the season (Bundesliga),” he wrote.
“No worry I no play AFCON
Na why I dey wait for memes d or,” which translated to mean no worries it’s because I didn’t feature at the AFCON so I’m waiting for Ballon d’Or nomination for memes.
Meanwhile, among other players who made the cut include South Africa’s goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, Achraf Hakimi of Morocco, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, Sofiane Rahimi of Morocco and Côte d’Ivoire’s Simon Adingra.
The 2024 CAF Awards over the period between January 2024 and October 2024.
This year’s award is scheduled on 16 December 2024 in Marrakech, Morocco.
Victor Osimhen and Asisat Osimhen are the reigning men and women recipient for the 2023 awards.
