The former Real Madrid youngster has emerged as a January transfer target for Arsenal who are exploring a move for a striker this month.

Ivan Toney is thought to be the Gunners’ top target but with Brentford holding out for as much as £100million for his services with Victor Osimhen valued at a similar amount by Napoli, cheaper options have been considered.

Reports this week have claimed Arsenal have launched a bid of £22million for the 26-year-old – an offer reportedly rejected with Getafe holding out for £39m for his services.

Despite speculation linking him with a move to north London, Mayoral insists he is not currently thinking about a move away.

‘It is news that has surprised me too,’ Mayoral said, Estadio Deportivo report. ‘I have not spoken with the club or with my representative. I am very focused on Getafe, on a day-to-day basis.’

Mayoral has scored 12 goals in 18 La Liga appearances with only Jude Bellingham outscoring him in Spain this season.

Arsenal have lost three of their last four games in all competitions, scoring just two goals in that run.

Current strikers Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah have scored just eight goals between them this season with the Gunners the lowest goal scorers in the clutch of five clubs  at the top of the league.

Mikel Arteta however has played down the possibility of the Gunners making a major addition up front his month.

‘At the moment, it doesn’t look realistic,’ Arteta said following Arsenal’s FA Cup defeat to Liverpool.

‘What my job is and what we have to do is improve our players and try to get somewhere with the players we have and get better results.’
