Arsenal are leading the chase to sign Serhou Guirassy and Borussia Dortmund are growing increasingly concerned they will be beaten to the Stuttgart striker by the Gunners this summer.
Guirassy, 28, had a barnstorming season in the Bundesliga after joining Stuttgart on a permanent basis 12 months ago, scoring 28 goals in 28 games to help the club finish second and qualify for the Champions League.
However, speculation is mounting that Guirassy will be on his way out of the MHPArena, with clubs from around Europe alerted to his extraordinary goalscoring exploits last term.
The likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Manchester United had all been credited with a strong interest but are now believed to be focussing on alternative targets in the summer transfer window.
Reports emanating out of Germany this week indicate that Arsenal are involved in a three-way tussle with Dortmund and AC Milan for Guirassy’s signature, with the prolific Guinea international keen for a fresh challenge.
According to Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg, Dortmund ‘fear Arsenal the most’ at this stage of the transfer saga but the player himself is yet to make a decision over his future.
It’s claimed Dortmund’s hierarchy, who recently hired Nuri Sahin as the club’s new head coach, have stressed to Guirassy that he is their priority attacking target for the summer.
Stuttgart bosses have done everything in their power to dissuade Guirassy from leaving but the sought-after forward has a release clause in his contract allowing him to depart for as little as €18-20million (£15-17m).
Guirassy’s current contract with Stuttgart, which he signed last summer, runs through to June 2026.
Speaking to Sky Germany last month, Stuttgart chairman Alexander Wehrle, insisted Guirassy was ‘really comfortable’ at the club and played down rumours of a possible transfer.
‘It was already clear last summer that he was leaving and I already heard in the winter where he is said to have already signed,’ Wehrle said.
‘The fact is: He feels really comfortable, he is an undisputed leader for the first time in his career, he knows what he has in Sebastian Hoeness and the coaching team.
‘He can now also play the Champions League. That’s another argument.
‘For many it is clear that he is leaving, for me it is not at all clear. ‘But we will sit down after the season.’
