Borussia Dortmund vs Freiburg halted for ten minutes as ex-Liverpool star Emre Can speaks to fans during protests

Borussia Dortmund's clash against Freiburg was halted for ten minutes as fans protested against future investment in the German Football League.

It was recently revealed that two-thirds of Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga sides voted for an investor to purchase a stake in the Bundesliga media rights company.

The minority stake of the Deutsche Fussball Liga [DFL] is reported to be eight per cent, with the 20-year agreement potentially being worth around £860million.

European leagues are beginning to show more interest in boosting revenue with the help of external funding, but fans in Germany have strongly protested against this.

Dortmund's match against Cologne in January was interrupted by supporters as they threw tennis balls and chocolate coins onto the pitch in the 12th minute to symbolise the '12th man'.

And a similar instance happened on Friday night at the Signal Iduna Park, with fans clearly not showing signs of calming down.

Once again, tennis balls and chocolate coins were thrown as Dortmund led 1-0 through Donyell Malen's stunning opener.

The match was stopped for a total of ten minutes as officials cleared the pitch, with 12 minutes added on at the end of the first half.

Emre Can could even be seen talking to fans in what seemed to be a bid to help halt the protests.

Both Dortmund and Freiburg players were seen standing around and passing the ball between themselves whilst supporters made their voices head.

Play eventually resumed, with Donyell Malen scoring his second of the game deep in the seventh minute of injury time.

The ex-Arsenal academy forward now has nine Bundesliga goals this season to match his tally of last campaign.
