Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola was not a happy man.
Newcastle United taking away a point from Sunday’s game.
The referee awarding Bournemouth a late winner.
Then VAR reviewed the added time ‘goal’ and it was disallowed for handball against Dango Ouattara.
All a bit embarrassing from Andoni Iraola.
Yes, any manager is gutted when they see a late winner disallowed.
However, for Andoni Iraola to blame the VAR official for his side’s failure to win is embarrassing.
The replays showed the VAR and everybody else that where the ball hit the Bournemouth player’s arm, makes it a handball.
Andoni Iraola also gets it totally wrong when he is outraged that the VAR didn’t direct the on the pitch referee to look at the images of where the ball struck the player. That isn’t how it works. On things that can be measured, such as this incident or offsides, the VAR makes the decision, they don’t pass it back for the on the pitch referee to look at again.
Andoni Iraola talking about Bournemouth’s disallowed late ‘goal’ against Newcastle United:
“It is the most frustrated I’ve been on a touchline.
“I went to talk to the referee but I think the referee cannot do much more.
“He gave the goal.
“VAR didn’t give him the chance to see it again.
“He heard me complain but it’s not against him.
He cannot do much more.
He’s not the one who made a mistake today.
“I understand the rule and they will try to make me think there is a part of reasoning there but I completely don’t agree. It’s just common sense.
“Anyone who has played football and looks at the strength of the ball when it touches the back of the net knows that’s not handball, it’s a shoulder.”
