Julius Abure, the embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party, is currently leading a delegation to a meeting convened by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) alongside leaders of various political parties.

This meeting forms part of the commission’s routine quarterly consultative forum, aimed at discussing developments within the political landscape and strategizing for forthcoming elections.

Following the National Convention which reaffirmed Abure as the National Chairman of the party, concerns arose when INEC stated it did not oversee the process, as mandated by the Electoral Act. This absence of monitoring has fueled speculation regarding INEC’s recognition of Abure’s position as National Chairman.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Abure’s leadership have found themselves entangled in a struggle for supremacy over the control of the party. While the NLC remains adamant that Abure’s tenure has expired, it therefore challenged his continued occupancy of the National Chairman role.

The NLC had gone ahead to declare Abure removed and appointed caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of the LP pending when an all-embracing convention would be conducted to elect new leadership.
