In a move showcasing loyalty to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, lawmakers have appointed Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo as the new Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Taking the oath of office on Wednesday, Hon. Oko Jumbo assumed the role of the assembly’s factional Speaker.
Jumbo affirmed his commitment to collaborating with Governor Fubara, stating, “I have directed the Clerk of the Assembly to communicate the emergence of a new leadership of the assembly to the executive.”
Governor Fubara has contested the legitimacy of the state House of Assembly under Hon. Martin Amaewhule’s leadership. This stance follows the decision of lawmakers allied with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Regarding the Amaewhule-led Assembly, Fubara declared, “Let me say it here, those group of men who claim that they are assembly members, they are not existing. I want it to be on record.”
Fubara further elaborated, “Their existence and whatever they have been doing is because I allowed them to do so. If I don’t recognize them, they are nowhere, that is the truth.”
