In the early hours of Wednesday, Shafiu Aminu, a resident of Kano, reportedly set fire to a mosque located at Laraba Abasawa in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State, leaving worshippers injured.
Witnesses stated that the arsonist struck while worshippers were observing the ‘Subh’ prayer. Using petrol, he ignited the fire while approximately 40 people were inside the mosque. After setting the fire, he locked the mosque, trapping those inside.
“It took time for people outside to become aware of the incident and rescue the victims,” said a member of the community who requested anonymity.
At least 28 worshippers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano for treatment.
Upon visiting the scene, a resident named Ibrahim Jibrin recounted seeing a boy engulfed in flames, seeking help. He mentioned that this incident was not the first involving Aminu, noting previous conflicts within his family.
Aminu voluntarily surrendered to the Police following the incident. However, attempts to reach Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the spokesperson for the Kano Police command, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls.
