On Tuesday, unidentified gunmen shot two police officers at a security checkpoint on the Owerri-Okigwe road in Imo State.

The attackers also shot a civilian inside a house. An eyewitness reported the incident to newsmen, stating it occurred around 6:25 am at Akabo in the Ikeduru Council Area of the state.

A voice in a viral video said, “This just happened now. Unknown gunmen have shot two police officers at Akabo in Ikeduru LGA. Also, a civilian was shot.”

The video showed two police officers in uniform lying helplessly on the ground, along with another body inside a room.

Another eyewitness in the video described, “Unknown gunmen in a vehicle driving erratically were shooting sporadically. After killing the two police officers at the security checkpoint, they also shot a man inside his house. They specifically targeted the man.”

Residents have fled for safety, and shop owners have closed their stores out of fear.

One resident, speaking anonymously for security reasons, said, “We are running. Nobody knows what is next, so we have to take cover for now until everything calms down. The best thing is to close your shop at the moment.”

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, has yet to comment on the incident at the time of this report.
