The crisis within the All Progress Congress (APC) in Benue escalated on Friday as anti-riot police operatives took control of the party’s secretariat.
Starting as early as 7 am, a detachment of mobile and regular police operatives, alongside members of the Civil Defence Corps and Livestock Guards, assumed positions at the gates, blocking access roads to the secretariat.
They used their operational vehicles to obstruct all routes leading to the secretariat.
The Police Command also halted the State Executive Council Meeting (SEC) and APC stakeholders meeting, which were organized by the Comrade Austin Agada-led executive of the party and scheduled for the day.
In a letter addressed to the APC chairman, Comrade Austin Agada, Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adesina declared, ”The State Executive Council meeting and all kinds of political meetings are to be suspended until further notice.”
The letter, signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Samuel Gimba, stated that the SEC meeting must be suspended in compliance with a directive from Governor Hyacinth Alia, who suspended all forms of political meetings and gatherings in the state.
The decision, according to the police, is due to the volatile security atmosphere in Benue.
