The 2023/24 season has set up some incredible story lines across the top-five leagues so far. Bayer Leverkusen leading the Bundesliga, five points clear off Bayern Munich perhaps is the most interest of the bunch.
The Premier League is brewing up a tasty title race between Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool, while Bologna are taking it to the big dogs in the Serie A, sitting in sixth place currently, only three off Champions League spots.
Last, but definitely not the least, La Liga has presented an interesting little story from Catalonia this season as Girona sit second in the table, five points behind Real Madrid.
They were first for a very long time before Carlo Ancelotti’s side eventually caught up with them and beat them 4-0 this weekend in one of the most dominant performances of the season so far.
Their manager, Michel, has to be credited with most of this success. He has implemented a modern and fast approach into this Girona side which has not only worked wonders performance-wise, but also been a delight to watch.
As one of the best coaches in the league this season, Michel was linked to the Barcelona job almost instantly as Xavi announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the season.
He has, however, now clarified any doubts over his future. In an interview relayed by SPORT, he said:
“I am a better coach thanks to this club. Quique Cárcel and the club have made my work very easy, in other teams I have had more problems. I have a contract and I am very comfortable. I think I’ll continue here. I am convinced.”
Michel also name-checked Barcelona (and Madrid) in a different context, saying that they do not have the pressure to win every game, which sort of plays out in their favour.
“The dream continues, but the demand to win each match is not our requirement. The team is having a historic season. When Barça and Madrid don’t win it’s a problem, I hope it’s not like that with Girona,”
