English, the upcoming Broadway production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Sanaz Toossi, will feature the original Off Broadway world premiere cast, including Tala Ashe, Ava Lalezarzadeh, Pooya Mohseni, Marjan Neshat and Hadi Tabbal.

The casting announcement was made today by Roundabout Theatre Company. The play, as previously announced, will be directed by Knud Adams.

English begins previews on Friday, January 3, 2025, at Roundabout’s Todd Haimes Theatre, with an official opening on Thursday, January 23. The limited engagement will play for 66 performances only through Sunday, March 2.

The synopsis: “The comedy unfolds in an Iranian classroom where adult English learners practice for their proficiency exam. As they leapfrog through a linguistic playground, their wildly different dreams, frustrations, and secrets come to light. Can they overcome the limits of language to discover what they really want to say?”

Ashe will play “Elham”; Lalezarzadeh, “Goli”; Mohseni, “Roya”; Neshat, “Marjan”; and Tabbal, “Omid.” The entire cast, which appeared in the 2022 world premiere Off Broadway production of English at the Atlantic Theater, is making its Broadway debut.

Ashe is perhaps most widely known for her five-year fun as Zari Tomaz on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Lalezarzadeh is currently making her series regular debut as Cleo in the Apple TV+ psychological thriller Before starring Billy Crystal, Judith Light, and Rosie Perez.

Mohseni has appeared on stage in Sarah Mantell’s In the Amazon Warehouse Parking Lot and Menier Chocolate Factory’s The Sex Party.

Neshat recently starred in the one-woman thriller Sandra by David Cale at the Vineyard Theater, and Tabbal has appeared Off Broadway in Russian Troll Farm and The Vagrant Trilogy.
