EXCLUSIVE: Broken English Productions, a subsidiary of Grandave Capital, is partnering with Women In Film on a new initiative to showcase and empower the talents of three new women filmmakers through the production of three short films. The initiative is led by Broken English Productions CEO Jolene Rodriguez
To compete for one of the top three finalist positions, you must be a first time filmmaker and have an original script that’s less than 15 pages ready to submit via this link by midnight PT on February 9, 2024. Three winners will receive a $30k grant each to produce a short film along with individualized mentorship and industry networking opportunities. Completed films from the filmmakers will be submitted to various film festivals and will also have an industry screening.
Data from the 2019 Cannes Film Festival revealed that only 25% of films in the official selection were directed by women. According to a study conducted by the Center For The Study of Women In Television and Film, in the top-grossing films of 2020, women only accounted for 31% of all speaking characters. Rodriguez’s goal is to address these disparities and promote greater inclusivity in the film industry.
“WIF is proud to be a fiscal sponsor for this project by Broken English Productions, an organization that has dedicated its mission to women and the Latinx community,” says Kirsten Schaffer, CEO of WIF. “We are excited to witness this project come to fruition and look forward to seeing the three short films that are in production.”
“As our production company continues to grow, so does our commitment to empowering female voices in the industry. We are thrilled to join forces with Women in Film, an organization that has been championing women filmmakers since 1973,” added Jolene Rodriguez, CEO Broken English Productions.
Driven by the vision of amplifying the reach of women in film, Broken English Productions, supported by Director and Producer Ruben Islas of Grandave Capital, provides opportunities and platforms for underrepresented voices in the film industry.
“We are thrilled to support the groundbreaking collaboration between Broken English Productions and Women in Film. This initiative reflects our commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in the film industry. By empowering women in film, we aim to create a more equitable and vibrant creative landscape. We believe in the power of diverse voices and perspectives, and we are proud to be part of this important endeavor” said Ruben Islas, director/producer, CEO of Grandave Capital.
