Over the past month, constant speculation has circulated about Bruno Fernandes and his future. It has now been suggested that the Manchester United captain wants to join Marcus Rashford in the club’s top earnings bracket.
According to The Guardian, Fernandes is pushing for a new contract from United that would see him become one of the club’s top earners.
Jamie Jackson claims the Portugal international is waiting for clarity regarding Erik ten Hag’s future and the club’s long-term vision before deciding whether to seek a transfer.
The report adds: “Although the United hierarchy, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, view Fernandes as the team’s best player and are not actively looking to sell him, the need to bring in funds and reduce the wage bill in order to invest significantly in the squad may mean any realistic offer will be countenanced.”
With Casemiro and Jadon Sancho listed among United’s highest-paid players and likely to leave this summer, the money spent on wages should decrease ahead of next season.
Fernandes’ current deal runs to 2026 with the option of a further 12 months, and he pockets about £200,000 a week. It is believed he feels undervalued given his influence in the team.
Interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona
On Saturday, Stretty News revealed that Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich were considering a move for Fernandes this summer.
Other outlets have suggested Barcelona as a potential destination, though The Guardian dismisses that claim because of financial implications.
It is understood that Fernandes’ agent, Miguel Pinho, has been holding talks with potential suitors.
