Manchester United supporters have been left fearing the worst after reports claim that Bruno Fernandes could be the subject of an approach from Bayern Munich.

Indeed, the prospect of losing the influential club captain as the side enters another period of rebuilding – under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s guidance – is unimaginable.

Fernandes is on the back of being named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for the third time in his four years at Old Trafford, having played an integral role at the heart of the side across 2023/2024.

While, of course, the term was a turbulent one, the Portugal star notched 15 goals and 13 assists in all competitions.

One assist, in particular, had Fernandes receiving widespread plaudits after he set up Kobbie Mainoo in the FA Cup final with an outrageous no-look, first-touch pass that fell straight at the teenager’s feet.

Over the weekend, the speculation regarding his potential exit has gained momentum – much to fans’ dismay.

The latest on Fernandes’ potential exit

Fabrizio Romano revealed that the 29-year-old’s agent, Miguel Pinho, had met with ‘several top clubs around Europe’ last week, and shortly after, Portuguese outlet O Jogo claimed that Bayern ignited their pursuit of Fernandes by opening talks with Pinho.

Nevertheless, former Republic of Ireland international Andy Townsend believes the United star has done enough to put supporters’ minds at ease.

“That would be pretty disastrous for United fans right now, and I am sure they are not even contemplating it,” Townsend said of the situation on talkSPORT. “And it would have to be something incredible, and probably it would have to come down to the fact if Bruno turns around and says, ‘I want to go’.

“I don’t actually think that’s going to happen at this point. I genuinely wouldn’t have heard him speak about how much he wants to stay and be part of a really successful Man United.

“I honestly feel that he is serious there, and I think he wants to stay and try to be part of its turnaround.”

Townsend is presumably referencing the recent interview Fernandes did with the Players’ Tribune, in which he addressed the idea that he could leave the club in the near future.

“After this difficult season, it is my responsibility to give more. It starts with me. And it starts tomorrow [in the FA Cup final]. We have to give everything in this last match against [Manchester] City, and we have to move forward,” Fernandes penned.

“I love to step out at Old Trafford more than anything in the world. I don’t want to leave. This has always been my ultimate dream.”
