Bryan Danielson lists not wrestling Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart as one of his biggest regrets.
Before WrestleDream, Bryan Danielson spoke with Shawn Garrett, who asked him if he had any regrets in wrestling. The former AEW Champion confirmed he did, with missing out on wrestling Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart being two big ones.
The American Dragon was trained by Shawn Michaels as a youngster, while growing up as a big fan of Bret Hart. Both men retired before Danielson could become a star in WWE, so that dream match remained exactly that.
“Definitely. There are things that I’ve done that have been foolish.” Bryan Danielson said. “The guy that I always wanted to wrestle but never got a chance to was Shawn Michaels. He was the guy who first trained me. He’s just one of those guys who’s a legend. You’d love to get that chance.”
“There was a period during 2013/2014 where I thought we were almost there and it could happen. That’s one. I got to be in the ring with Bret Hart once (at Summerslam 2010), on his team. Those kind of people are people, the “legend-style people” that I wish I could have wrestled.”
Bryan Danielson: The Diving Headbutt Is Really Stupid
Bryan Danielson continued, sharing that he regrets still doing the diving headbutt regularly. The move has infamously been blamed for numerous head injuries, including to Dynamite Kid and Chris Benoit. Bryan Danielson notes that it doesn’t even get a good reaction, but that all the wrestlers do things in the moment that they may regret later on.
“As far as stuff I’ve done in wrestling, one of the things that I probably shouldn’t have done, yet still do it sometimes, is the diving headbutt. It’s really stupid. It doesn’t even that great a reaction. The risk-to-reward ratio is really low.”
“But there are some things that I do in the moment that I don’t know why I’m doing it. I think we all get those things. Everybody has vices. I don’t drink and I’ve never done drugs. None of that kind of thing. But sometimes, my vice is when I’m out there, doing something stupider than I probably should. It feels good in the moment. When I get to the back, it doesn’t feel so good!”
