The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and Muhammadu Buhari during the visit
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, on Thursday, commended Muhammadu Buhari for his efforts during his tenure as President of Nigeria.
In a statement shared with PUNCH Online, the monarch made the remarks during a two-day courtesy visit to the former President at his country home in Daura, Katsina State.
The visit, the statement said, provided an opportunity for meaningful discussions between the revered monarch and the former President on key issues essential to Nigeria’s continued development.
Expressing his delight, Oba Ogunwusi noted that Buhari appeared to be in remarkably high spirits during their meeting.
The statement quoted the monarch as saying, “He’s 30 years younger right now,” reflecting not only Ooni’s affection for the former leader but also his optimistic outlook on Buhari’s life post-presidency.
He added, “I can happily tell the whole of Nigeria that he’s living super well. When you see him, you will be completely shocked at how relaxed and vibrant he is, radiating good spirits. He looks remarkably younger than his age, and God has truly blessed him with renewed good health.”
The Ooni particularly highlighted that Buhari’s unique experiences as both a former military and civilian President, along with his significant support base in the northern regions, have the potential to ease governance challenges for the current administration.
Speaking further, the Ooni underscored Buhari’s stature as an elder statesman, highlighting his humility and approachable leadership style. The monarch recognised the inherent challenges of governance, stating that while no leader can satisfy every citizen, he believes Buhari made notable strides in steering Nigeria towards greater progress, stability, and unity.
He paid tribute to Buhari’s diligent efforts during his presidency, saying, “He did his very best as Nigeria’s President, guiding the nation on its path.”
The statement partly read, “This meeting was not just a casual encounter but a significant diplomatic engagement underscoring the need for dialogue between leaders across the country. This historic meeting is a testament to Ooni Ogunwusi’s unwavering commitment to promoting national unity and nurturing constructive relationships within Nigeria’s leadership framework.
“During his visit, the monarch expressed the fundamental reason for his trip—to check on President Buhari’s well-being after more than a year since his departure from the presidency. He emphasised the importance of maintaining strong connections with Nigeria’s leaders, believing that these relationships are essential for cultivating a more unified nation, capable of fostering growth and prosperity for all its citizens.”
On his part, Buhari warmly welcomed Ogunwusi, graciously escorting him to the Emir of Daura’s palace.
He later hosted the Ooni, along with a distinguished entourage of traditional rulers, which included the Ajero of Ijero Kingdom, Oba Joseph Adewole; the Oore of Otun Ekiti, Oba Adekunle Adeayo Adeagbo; and the Alara of Ilara Epe, Lagos State, Oba Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo.
In his remarks, Buhari said, “It’s always a privilege to receive Kabiyesi and his esteemed entourage of kings. Let us continue to pray for the unity of our country and hold these leaders in our thoughts. My unwavering belief in Nigeria remains strong and unshakeable.”
The statement added that the meeting was not just a casual encounter but a significant diplomatic engagement underscoring the need for dialogue between leaders across the country.
