Former President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a message to President Bola Tinubu regarding the way he has been handling Nigeria.
Buhari expressed his admiration for President Tinubu’s leadership, acknowledging the challenges of governing Nigeria and affirming Tinubu’s performance despite these complexities.
Buhari conveyed his commendation during a meeting with the comptroller-general and management team of the Nigeria Customs Service in Daura, Katsina State, on Sunday.
He emphasized the demanding nature of leading Nigeria, stating that the country’s intricacies pose significant challenges for any leader. Despite these hurdles, Buhari praised Tinubu for his effective governance, especially considering the economic hardships faced by Nigerians nationwide.
The former president urged Nigerians to endure the current economic challenges and lend their support to the policies and initiatives of the current administration.
He remarked, “I thank you very much for coming. I very much appreciate it. I thought Tinubu has done very well. Nigeria is so complex. Really, there isn’t much anybody can do.”
It’s noteworthy that economic difficulties have escalated in Nigeria since Buhari’s departure from office on May 29, 2023.
On his inauguration day, Tinubu announced the end of fuel subsidy by his administration. This decision led to a significant increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit, soaring from N185 to over N600.
Additionally, Tinubu’s government implemented financial reforms that resulted in the continuous depreciation of the naira against the dollar after the Central Bank of Nigeria adopted a market-driven exchange rate system. Consequently, the naira’s instability against the dollar in the market led to rates ranging between N1,400 and N1,900.
In response to these challenges, Nigerians, led by organized labor, have staged protests nationwide in recent weeks to voice their dissatisfaction with the worsening economic conditions, pushing more Nigerians below the poverty line.
