Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s injury will go down as one of the defining moments of Barcelona’s 2024-25 campaign irrespective of how it turns out.

The German shot-stopper fell prey to a serious knee injury against Villarreal and his setback was later confirmed to be a complete patellar rupture. He immediately underwent surgery last week but appears set to miss the entire season.

With the captain ruled out, Inako Pena has stepped up as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper but Barcelona are also very close to signing Wojciech Szczesny as a replacement in the coming days.

A message of support

Barcelona have ensured to convey their messages of support and belief in Ter Stegen after the player’s freak injury and are convinced that he will return stronger than ever before.

In what comes as a welcome gesture, the German goalkeeper’s boyhood club Borussia Monchengladbach supported him with a large banner in the team’s recent clash where they wrote,

“Stay strong, Marc-André – Borussia always get up!”

Ter Stegen played four seasons at the Bundesliga side before joining the Catalan giants in 2014 and the club are thus a huge part of his football career and development. A touching message from them, needless to say, will go a long way in lifting his spirits.

After the fans’ thoughtful gesture, the player even replied to their well-wishes via his social media with a message saying, “Thank you very much for your support.”

While the club expect the player to be out for the entire season, the German star is optimistic that he can make it for the tail end of Barcelona’s season as Thibaut Courtois did last season for Real Madrid.

Given that he will not be match-fit even if he makes such a speedy recovery, the team will likely count on Pena and Szczesny this term. After all, they are registering the Polish goalkeeper only on the premise that Ter Stegen is out for the long haul.
