In Germany, this Wednesday February 21, 2024 was a date more than awaited by all German football fans. For several weeks now, the aisles of various stadiums across the country have been rumbling. Several matches were interrupted by the throwing of tennis balls or chocolate coins after the 36 clubs of the two divisions had voted in favor of opening negotiations with a potential foreign investor: “The management committee unanimously decided at its meeting in Frankfurt not to continue the process of concluding a marketing partnership with foreign investors. A satisfactory continuation of the process no longer seems possible in view of current developments”said the spokesperson and president of Borussia Dortmund, Hans-Joachim Watzke, in the press release.

“Even though there is a large majority in favor of the entrepreneurial necessity of the strategic partnership: German professional football finds itself in the middle of a showdown that is provoking great debates not only within the league association between clubs, but also within clubs between players, coaches, club managers, supervisory bodies, general assemblies and fan communities, debates which endanger with increasing vehemence the progress of matches and therefore the integrity of the competition”, he continued.
