The Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, has started talks with Dr. Sidi Ould Tah,  the President of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, on potential areas of collaboration and support between the state government and the bank.

In a statement by the Director General Media and Press Affairs, Mamman Mohammed, he noted that the meeting took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday.

Governor Buni highlighted the significance of this partnership in aiding the state’s recovery from the extensive damage inflicted by the Boko Haram insurgency.

Yobe State, he said, “being one of the most impacted regions by the insurgency, faced severe challenges including loss of lives, destruction of infrastructure, and disruption of livelihoods.”

Despite these adversities, Buni expressed gratitude to the Almighty for the return of the peace to the state, which has enabled the relocation of residents back to their communities and the reconstruction of essential facilities.

He emphasised the need for external support, particularly from the Arab Bank, to expedite the reconstruction, rehabilitation, and recovery process in Yobe State.

The governor who elaborated on the state’s agricultural potential, noting its vast arable land and a predominantly farming population, highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the state’s Agricultural Empowerment Programme aimed at modernising farming practices and enhancing productivity in crops like sesame seeds and gum arabic.

He underscored the untapped mineral resources in the state awaiting investment opportunities.

The Buni while also emphasising the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability, infrastructure development, and addressing climate-related challenges such as desert encroachment and seasonal floods, outlined the need for increased investments in agriculture, education, healthcare, and infrastructure to ensure sustainable development and economic growth in Yobe State.

Dr. Sidi Ould Tah commended the governor for his efforts in rebuilding critical infrastructure and promoting key sectors like agriculture and healthcare.

He pledged the bank’s support in exploring collaborative opportunities to advance the state’s reconstruction and recovery agenda.

In response, Buni expressed appreciation for the bank’s willingness to assist in achieving the state’s development objectives, underscoring the importance of strategic partnerships in driving sustainable progress and prosperity for the people of Yobe State.
