Chelsea are paying attention to the goalkeepers market this summer as they could perhaps look for a transfer to replace the likes of Robert Sanchez and Djorde Petrovic.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano as he spoke exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column to respond to the transfer rumours linking the Blues with Aston Villa ‘keeper Emi Martinez.

It seems Romano is not yet convinced there’s much to the Martinez to Chelsea stories, with the Argentina international happy and settled at Villa Park, which certainly looks an exciting place to be right now under the expert management of Unai Emery.

Still, Chelsea are a big name and will no doubt hope they can soon get back to being closer to the top four than they have been for the last couple of years, so Martinez may well be tempted if they come in with an offer.

Emi Martinez to Chelsea?

For now, although Romano says Chelsea are considering a signing in goal, he’s playing down the links with Martinez, so it will be interesting to see if they end up prioritising someone else for that position.

“Chelsea are also attentive to the goalkeepers market, from what I heard, and I’m aware there have been reports about another former Arsenal player as Emi Martinez has been linked with the Blues after his superb form for Aston Villa,” Romano said.

“At the moment, Martinez is fully focused on Villa and loves being at the club. We will see what Chelsea decides to do, but it’s not something concrete at this stage.”

Martinez shone during a spell at Arsenal earlier in his career, but he left for Villa to play more regularly and his career has only continued to improve since then, as he also starred for his country as they won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
