Chelsea have been handed a transfer boost after Romelu Lukaku performed a U-turn over his stance on a possible move to the Saudi Pro League.

The Blues are desperate to permanently offload the flop, who is currently on a season-long loan at Roma after the west Londoners could not find a buyer.

The 30-year-old has no future at Chelsea and was made to train with the U21s when head coach Mauricio Pochettino arrived this summer.

Lukaku is on huge wages – which has limited his number of options – but a transfer to Saudi Arabia could work given the wealth of the clubs in the country.

The Belgium international rejected a move to Al-Hilal in the summer but has now changed his opinion on a potential switch to the Middle East.

‘In the next two years I see this league becoming one of the best in the world, if not the best,’ Lukaku told Belgian outlet HLN.

‘The clubs make a lot of efforts to bring the ‘big’ players here. As a result, the teams and the footballing qualities are improving significantly.’

Lukaku, who is under contract at Chelsea until 2026, was then asked if he could see himself playing in the Saudi Pro League and added: ‘Absolutely.’

The striker has impressed on loan at Roma, producing 15 goals across 26 games for the Italian side.

It is his second spell away from Stamford Bridge since he rejoined Chelsea in 2021, spending last season on loan at Inter Milan.
