Wesley Fofana has revealed he was approached with an opportunity to leave Chelsea over the summer and he was very tempted to take it.

The 23-year-old has been at Stamford Bridge since summer of 2022 but injuries have meant that he has made just 23 appearances for the Blues.

The France international is fit now and clearly well thought of by manager Enzo Maresca as Fofana has started all three of Chelsea’s Premier League games so far this campaign.

Despite this, the centre-back thought about leaving over the summer, when his hometown club came calling and pulled at his heartstrings.

Fofana was born in Marseille and is a fan of the Ligue 1 side, so when he had contact with the club he admits he was tempted by the opportunity to move home.

‘I had a conversation that really touched me,’ Fofana told Free Foot. ‘I would be lying if I said I didn’t weigh it up. It was from [Mehdi] Benatia, Marseille’s sporting director.

‘It touched me and I think everyone knows why. I thought about it but there you go, the current objective is to succeed at Chelsea, to try and play regularly, and to establish myself at my club.’

Fofana signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea in 2022, but still a very young man he is happy to talk up the possibility of playing for Marseille one day in the future.

‘OM, we’ll see one day. I still have a contract until 2029 and we’ll see after that. I have never hidden it, [Marseille] is my city, my club, I am an OM supporter,’ he said.

‘We’ll see if I end up being at Marseille in a few years, or if I stay at Chelsea for the rest of my career’
